Hidden Memories
An Investigation into the Emotional Life That Dementia Cannot Erase
What if the person you love still carries emotional wounds that dementia cannot reach — and healing them still matters?
What Dementia Cannot Erase
When a loved one disappears into the fog of Alzheimer’s disease, families grieve a presence that is still physically there. But what if the emotional life — the joy, the fear, the love, the long-buried pain — is still very much alive inside, unreachable by words but not by healing?
The results were unexpected, measurable, and deeply human. This is the story of what was found.
An Idea Original to This Investigation
At the heart of Hidden Memories is an original hypothesis developed by co-author Judee Beardsley, a gerontological social worker and dementia care specialist. Drawing on the Reisberg retrogenesis framework — which observes that Alzheimer’s patients regress through developmental stages in reverse order — Judee identified something that had not been formally investigated before.
As patients regress through each developmental stage, they appear to re-encounter the emotional content and unresolved trauma associated with that period of their life. The emotional wounds of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood do not disappear with the memories — they resurface, trapped and unresolved, in a mind that can no longer articulate them.
This intersection of retrogenesis and trapped emotion theory is original to this investigation and has not been published elsewhere. It represents a new lens through which dementia care professionals, researchers, and families may come to understand the inner life of those living with Alzheimer’s disease.
